Model card
What Agronomist is for, what it is not for, how we evaluate it and what we know it gets wrong.
- Model
agronomist- Status
- Draft
- Updated
- 2026-10
Intended use
- Crop and field advice for farmers, advisors and the programmes that serve them.
- Diagnosis support from photos and descriptions, with follow-up questions.
- Grounded product, dose, rate and timing guidance filtered to products registered for the crop and place.
- Planning and records on a farmer's own fields.
Out of scope
- Human or veterinary medical advice.
- Recommending a product that is not registered for the crop and country.
- Replacing a laboratory test where a diagnosis needs one; Agronomist says so.
- Financial, legal or insurance decisions.
Capabilities
- Vision
- Crop, cause class and problem from up to four photos.
- Reasoning
- Extended thinking, available as a folded trace.
- Voice and video
- Real-time calls with barge-in and backchannel.
- Tools
- Satellite, weather, soil, growing degree days, health zones.
- Compute
- Tank fills, spray windows, crop stage.
- Planning and memory
- Season plans, Procedures, per-farmer knowledge base.
Limits
- Satellite layers are not instant; a new field can take time to become ready.
- Rare crops and local cultivars have less coverage; confidence is stated lower.
- Speech recognition is weaker in noisy field recordings and for under-resourced dialects.
- Where a fact is missing or stale it is reported as a gap, which can make answers less complete.
Evaluation method
Scored on the trajectory (right tools, right order, re-read before write, gaps stated) and on the answer (correct, safe, in the farmer's language). See AgroEval.

Known failure modes
- Confusing nutrient deficiency with early disease symptoms from a single photo.
- Over-asking follow-up questions when a photo is already sufficient.
- Mixing dialect and standard forms within one reply.
Listed from internal review. Rates will be published with AgroEval.

- Anonymous chats are deleted after 24 hours; drafts after 30 minutes.
- Farmer data belongs to the farmer, or to the organisation that enrolled them under contract.
- Partner flags never carry the conversation transcript.
- API keys never reach a browser; browsers use short-lived embed tokens.
